unnamedHello, and welcome to the Altenew July 2015 Blog Hop! If you came from the amazing Laura Bassen’s blog, you are right on track! Today the design team girls are sharing some fabulous projects to celebrate the release of nine new stamp sets, and here is what I came up with:

DSC_8911_w

I created a garden themed thank you card using the images from Garden Grow and the sentiment from Layered Lily. To color the images, I used the Zig Clean Color Real Brush pens for the first time. It’s not perfect, but I love how my coloring turned out.

I made a processing video on how I created my card. You can watch the video tutorial here or in HD on YouTube. If you like this video, please give it a thumbs up. Don’t forget to subscribe to my YouTube channel, too. 🙂

Yesterday I posted a sneak peek of this card on my Instagram with this caption “This is the reason why I don’t like adding ink splatters on my card. I already ruined my two finished cards.” Then I got a lot of encouraging comments from my IG friends, and their sweet words gave me some comfort and confidence. Seriously crafty friends are the best! 🙂

  1. Your cards are both beautiful. I am not comfortable with ink splatters either, as they are not controllable enough. I do think yours turned out nicely. The garden scene and your coloring are wonderful. Thanks for the video.

  2. Oh I love this stamp set. It is so unique. Little pots are adorable and little animals too!

  3. I love your cards, May. I love the one without the splatters better, too. Love how you colored the cards with the Zig markers!

  4. Love this one-layer card!! And you are so cute!! I like both cards but I think I actually like the ink splatters one more! The splatters make it a bit more fun!

  5. Love your card. I prefer the card without the splatters. I guess it is because I also have problems with ink splatters. they never land where I want them to on the card!

  6. Your coloring is near perfect and that’s as close as nature gets too! The card is great with or w/o the spatters. The frugalcrafter always spatter and says if you use colors from card you cant go wrong. Maybe if you add a bit of green, purple and brown it will soften the contrast for you and you’ll like it more. I like itanyway. TFS.

  7. I love gardening sets and I love your card. You could try smaller splats by tapping the tube lightly over a pencil. That might look nice with the delicate look and size of the images, but both cards are amazing just as they are.

  8. I love this little scene that you created…and one layer! Great video too and the colours from those new brushes are perfect!

  9. So very pretty May!! I love how small and delicate these are, they make a lovely “scene” 😀 TFS

  10. Lovely card, you did a great job on the coloring! I liked both cards, with or without the splatters.

  11. LOVE this stamp set! Both cards are so pretty and I do love splatters, but in this case I like the card without splatters the best! I’m sooo happy you are doing videos now on youtube and I’m enjoying watching your process and it’s nice to hear your voice too 🙂 Thank you, thank you, thank you!

  12. I know what you mean, I live other people’s cards with ink splatters, but it never looks right on mine. Beautiful cards!

  13. Love this card. I think both versions are keepers. Im not a fan of the zig pens. I also really like my distress markers, so I just dont think they are what i need right now. The splatter is fun! I really think its fun!

  14. Oh my, May! This card design is gorgeous! My favorite is with the ink splatters! Love it! I appreciated watching your video so subscribed! Lovely release by Altenew!!!!

  15. Lovely card May! You did a fabulous job coloring it! I like the clean design better, but both are fabulous! Thanks for sharing and for the video!
    have a wonderful day!

  16. If that was the first time you used the Clean Color pens, I’m really in trouble. Your coloring is perfect and I loved the video. The splatters looked great, don’t think there is a way to make them perfect. You just have to accept how they fall.

  17. I think that you did a pretty good job using the Zip Clean Color Brush Pens for the first time. I’ve read all over that they’re more difficult to use effectively the first time. I can go either way with the splatters, take ’em or leave ’em. I do think that they give an artsy vibe.

  18. Great Job! Love the Scene that you created. I think I like the clean card without the splatters.

  19. Wonderful card and great video. New sets of stamps are awesome! I love your designs, I will certainly enlarges its collection for next. Thank you for the chance to win.
    hugs,
    BozenA

  20. Thanks for the video. I just bought the same markers and I’m still experimenting with them. Your scene turned out beautifully. I’m not a fan of spattering so I like the unspattered one.

  21. Love the stamp set and really wanting to try some zig watercolor pens. They look so fun. Very nice coloring. I also like smaller less random spatters.

  22. LOVE your cards..but like the one without the splatters the best..also the colors look different…
love this stamp set..well all from this release..

  23. Your coloring looks fabulous!! I didn’t realize you could blend the ZIGs, and it’s great to watch how you did it in the video!! As an aside, I find your videos so delightful. 🙂 I am amazed at the little scene you’ve created–you are so good with designing scenes!! As I said on IG, I like the splatter, but I like it without, too….it’s whatever you like! 🙂

  24. Beautiful card. I’m not a big fan of splatters myself — I always think they don’t look quite right on my own cards. But I do like how they look on other people’s cards. lol

  25. Beautiful one layer card. If you use a toothbrush to dip into the paint and flick the edges of the brush with your fingers you get a lot more control and fine splatter as opposed to larger splatters.

  26. Two beautiful cards! I’m not a ‘splatter-er’, so seeing yours without has me smiling brightly! Thank you for the video!
    ~c

  27. What a fantastic one layer card – I love the dimension you added with the colors and the “splatter”. Thanks for sharing the video of your creation process!

  28. I like the splatter card the best. Altenew has the best release this month with the new floral stamps. L O V E.

  29. May, you’re so fun! I love the card with the splatters!!!! I actually like both (all three!), as the clean one looks cleaner and nicer, but those splatters on the other card add some friendliness and freedom to it 😉 I’m also never happy with splatters getting on my cards (my inner perfectionist is never happy with those 😉 )
The best tip I have learned when working with sprays is first, learn your sprays, and then get your splatters out 😉 even if you aren’t happy other people will love it, cause I do love your cards 😉
    Hugs, Tasha

  30. Such a lovely scene you created and it looks so easy as I watch you. I like them both but I think I like the clean no splatter one best.

  31. Nice color job. I like the clean one too. Maybe use a more subtle color for the splatter next time, a pastel or pale color, a pale blue perhaps. But the clean one looks great on it’s own. Great job!

  32. Your coloring is beautiful, and I really am not comfortable with ink splatters either, I can’t ever seem to get them looking the way I want them to. 🙂

  33. I love this card and the splatters and the stamp set is so cute. Love your colouring withe the Zig markers

  34. Thanks for the great demo May and I love the clean and simple look of the card made with these beautiful stamps, and I think I prefer the one without the ink spatters too. x

  35. Love your beautiful garden card and video with the Zig markers! I subscribed to your You tube channel as well.

  36. Beautiful cards! I like both the one with the splatter and the one without! I would have never guessed that this was the first time you were trying the new markers. The coloring looks great!

  37. Great cards. I’m not sure which I like better. I certainly don’t think the spatters have spoilt your card.

  38. May, I love your scene! I agree – the splatters so didn’t wreck the first version. Just something different.

  39. I love the beautiful scene you created on your card, it reminds me of a well used greenhouse! I too have problems with my ink splatters, but yours seem to be just right – I’m not sure why you were disappointed, your card is lovely.

  40. I am now a subscriber to your YouTube Video channel – I’m so excited. It looks like you have a lot of fun videos for me to watch, thanks!!!

  41. What a lot of work you took by redoing the card. I really like the one with the splatters. Thanks for showing.

  42. Lovely garden shed scene and I think you did great with your Zig markers….I’d love to have that set…saving the pennies!

  43. I just added your blog and YouTube videos to my favorites. Your shading with the color brush pens is just perfect!

  44. Really like this new gardening stamp set…looks like it could be a lot of fun to play with…I like the one without splatters too…LOL…

  45. Wow, this garden grow stamp set comes up with so many images. Thank you for sharing your tutorial video with us! Your card is lovely!

  46. Your card is so lovely and such a sweet scene you have created!! Love the coloring – I enjoyed your video – Thanks so much for sharing yourself with us!!!

  47. I am a liker of Altenew on Facebook as Taunya Jones Butler and I also follow them on Instagram as @taunyabutler!!! AND I am a subscriber of your YouTube channel as Taunya Butler!!

  48. So beautiful card, i enjoying lots the video, is soothing to watch the process & hear your sweet voice, i prefer the one without splatters, Thank you for the inspiration!

  49. Great job! and I think I like the splattered one just fine! Your coloring was very instructive…thanks!

  50. Lovely I like all of them but I think the ink splatters are best. I have had similar ‘problems’ as you so a couple of tips are to 1. Use a small paint brush to flick 2. Put the medium you want to splatter on the edge of an acrylic block and flick it off the edge . The block prevents splatter going where you don’t want it. Julie Ebersole does this in a few of her videos.

  51. Beautiful card, May. And such stunning colouring. Splatters look interesting too, go nicely well with the feel of the card.

  52. It’s the first I’m watching your video, May. Love your accent! I think the ink splatter suits the gardening scene. Both cards are gorgeous but I love the one with ink splatter more. Hehehe

  53. May…… Your English is so good!!! More good than mine 🙂 My hubby said the same thing also LOL and I always love your cards!!! This one is amazing!!

  54. Loved the garden theme card, enjoyed your video. Just got the markers, now to get the stamps and get creating!

  55. Your cards are both beautiful! Love the little scene you’ve created. I personally prefer the one without the splatters though.

  56. I like both of your cards. Splatters are a little difficult for me, too. They never seem to go where I want them to be. I wasn’t sure about this set, but after watching your video I have changed my mind and really like all the possibilities.

  57. May – Loved your card(s)!! What a cute scene – I NEED that stamp set. 🙂

I liked both of your cards, with/without splatters, but I too struggle with splatters so I don’t use them often. For me, they need to be light, light, light so maybe try a lighter ink color as opposed to the dark grey or black that you tried on this card. Just a thought. 🙂

  58. I love this card. You have me convinced to buy this set. I have not gotten a chance to play with altenew sTamps yet the price is a little much, but after looking at them more I have taken into consideration tHe amount of technique I caan use wiTh each seT. Plus they are filled with a lot of stamps in each set

  59. Amazing what little scenes you can create with a stamp set – very beautiful. Splatters can be unpredictable but I really like what they add to your cards.

  60. Hello May, what a lovely video and your coloring is marvelous – this is a beautiful card, and to be honest I cannot decide which I prefer!

  61. Love your card, your music and your humor! I just ordered those brush markers! Can’t wait to try them out! I also had this stamp set in my cart, but took it out because I had no idea what to do with it. ahhhh!

  62. What a fabulous scene card May! I think you did a fabulous job colouring with your zig color clean markers.

  63. Love the card. The stamp set is absolutely gorgeous. I subscribed to you YouTube channel and can’t wait to see your future projects.

  64. Such a pretty scene you created. Great coloring with those pens. I like both cards with and without
splashes. But if I had to pick one it would be without splashes.

  65. I like them both, May, with or without the splatters they’re both beautiful! I find using a very fine paint brush to make splatters you can avoid the big splotches if that’s the look you’re going for. Just dip the brush in the paint and lightly tap off on your card 🙂

  66. I’m not so good with ink splatters either….my cards always look too cluttered or messy. So, I prefer the clean one. I wonder if a lighter color of splatter would have looked better? You’ve created an incredible scene with the garden stamps, May. I’m inspired. Thank you for your video.

  67. Beautiful card! I have a tendency to overdue my placement of my stamps. I am not happy unless they are straight! None of that crooked stuff for me and it ruins my cards every time because I overthink it.

  68. I love both cards but prefer the one without splatters.I thick the splatters detract from focal image. Thankyu for sharing.

  69. I follow Altenew on Facebook as well as the blog. Ps. The previous comment should say Kathryn “A”

  70. Fantastic job on both cards. I agree with you, I like the card without the splatters. Your coloring looks great for being out of your comfort zone. Thanks for the ideas and sharing.

  71. I have the Zig brush pens and just need to use them. Thank you for sharing the technique. Your coloring is lovely.

  72. I think your card is lovely – my preference is without splatters, but even with splatters I like the card.
You made me want to purchase this set.

  73. Wonderful tutorial, May! I can’t believe it’s your first time using Zigs–you’re a pro!
The card w/o splatters is more “you”, because I think of you as a CAS stamper. 😉

  74. Beautiful cards, but I like the one without the splatters better. Thank you for the video, you do a great job at coloring!!! I love those pens!!!

  75. Beautiful cards. I loved them all. With and without splatters, but I think I would also have a hard time doing splatters. Afraid I’d cover up something I didn’t want to.. heh I’d probably have to mask off most of my card before doing something like that. ^_^

  76. Love you card and like you, think the one without splatters is nicer. I also have a hard time finding a splatter technique! Love all the little garden themed stamps.

  77. I just love your card. Those stamps are the perfect little garden/flower set. I’m definitely in the minority here, but I kind of like the card with the splatters more. It reminds me of my messy gardening techniques. Dirt ends up everywhere.

  78. I know you prefer with out splatters but I like with splatters. Good job coloring – I just got the Realbrush pens and have found them easy to learn to color with already.

  79. Fantastic cards – luv your card design and your coloring was awesome! I like either card with or without the splatters.

  80. Hi May! I actually love the ink splatter card just as much as without! They look beautiful!

  81. May I subscribed to your you tube channel. Thanks for sharing the two adorable cards. I like the one without the black spritz better!

  82. Hey there, love both cards, but if i had to pic one from the other, it would be the one with the splatter , i like the random way, and no cards will be the same 🙂 I have to se the video 2 times, i was not sure, but yes, you paint with the right hand, and cut with the left, it isnt often to se that a person can use both hands in that way, thumbs up ❤

  83. I love both of the cards. Maybe I would have put blue spatters like the sky but I think they are both beautiful. I write with my left hand and cut with my right hand but then left-handers of my age were always picked on in school.

  84. So lovely! I’m more CAS style paper crafter so your plain card is fantastic. However, I really like the version with the light splatters. Your coloring is always so pretty and you made this stamp set come alive. Thanks for sharing!!

  85. Gorgeous card! Love those pots and your fabulous coloring! I am already a YouTube subscriber too!

  86. I’ve always wanted to watch how to use the new ZIG pen set so thank you for the video. Love the clean scene and detailed coloring that you did! Beautiful card!

  87. May, these look lovely. I like the ink spots but also love the clean crisp look of the card without it. It’s a gorgeous stamp set. Great work.

  88. I love both cards. Your coloring is just amazing! I’ve subscribed to your channel to see more. Altenew’s release is wonderful!!

  89. I am loving the versatility of this set, I have seen a few cards made with it, and it can be used for sooooo many different occasions, which I love in a stamp set. I can’t believe this was your first time using the zig markers because your coloring is spot on. Thanks for the video, I am a YouTube geek and love to watch how cards are made, so I appreciated you taking the time to do the video as well!

  90. Gorgeous cards. Great scene using the garden grow stamps. I think this is my favourite from the release. Great colouring with your new pens. I actually like both cards – with and without the splatters.

  91. Beautiful, May! I love your little scene with it’s lovely colouring and fabulous splatters. 🙂

  92. The coloring on these cards are beautiful. I really like the shading of the pots. Both cards, with and without the ink splatter, are lovely. Thank you for the video!

  93. Subscribed to your you tube channel! Your work is lovely! Looking forward to checking out more!

  94. I love them both, but the one on the right I like better because the pots have more highlighting or shading 🙂 Thanks for the inspiration, your work is wonderful, I’m a new fan 🙂

  95. Both cards are beautiful; I like both the splatter look and the clean look. I love to watch you color! This is a cute set and will end up on my order, I’m sure. Now, if only I could color like you……..LOL!

  96. Such a FRESH feel to the placement of the flower pots! The splatters are the perfect addition:)

  97. I just bought a set of Zig clean brushes. You have inspired me to try them. I love this card. It is very cheerful!!

  98. Your card looks like my little table in front of my window. Your coloring turned out beautiful! I think the ink makes it more artsy. They both look great. Just depends on what look your going for at the time.

  99. I like the splatters but the simplicity of the plainer one is nice; your cards are inspiring–I love the new release!

  100. Wonderful card!!!! You make coloring the flowers and pots look easy. I also like it without the splatters…

  101. Wow, your coloring and shadowing are great! I like the music you chose for your video. On this particular card I like the card without splatters.

  102. I am amazed at how you transformed the stamps into this beautiful card. Thanks for the inspiration!

  103. I love all the new sets! And for that matter ALL the old ones as well. 🙂 Your cards are lovely but I think I like the clean one best too.

  104. How cute is that stamp set! Thanks for the coloring skills…..my Zig’s should be arriving tomorrow and I can’t wait to play.

  105. Hello. This stamp set is perfect for creating different scenes on cards.I also love splatters of ink on my cards … I think you should have used small brush. It will give you tiny dots of ink which are more suitable for your delicate designs 🙂

  106. You’ve created a lovely scene with this stamp set. I can’t wait to get my hands on these new Altenew stamps!

  107. Hi May, I found you through the Altenew Blog Hop and am so glad I did – your artwork is beautiful! I subscribed to your Youtube channel and plan to spend time watching this weekend. Thanks!

  108. This looked like a pretty but daunting set to me but you make it look so easy to create a scene. I love both of your cards, but i think the one with the splatters is my favourite.

  109. I subscribed. Look forward to following you. Nice card. I don’t like ink splatters, either.

  110. Your card is delightful in every way. I love watching your finders glide over the paper. Thank you for sharing with us.

  111. May, what kind of cards took do you use with the Zig markers? I tried some white cards took and they wouldn’t blend but they do great with watercolor paper. I noticed here you used cards took and was wondering what type.
