Hello, crafty friends! Welcome to the Altenew’s 2nd anniversary blog hop. If you came from the Pretty Pink Posh’s blog, you are right on track. This is a three day event with tons of inspiration and amazing PRIZES!

To celebrate the Altenew’s 2nd anniversary, I created a watercolor card with floral background. I used the flower images from Altenew’s stamp sets: Wild Hibiscus and Botanical Garden. Then I watercolored them with Kuretake Gansai Tambi watercolors.

Last weekend I went on the Altenew retreat to New York, and I had some fun crop night with Tasnim Ahmed and Jennifer Rzasa. Jen showed me some tips on watercoloring as I was struggling with this card. She asked me to let the paint dry before adding more color to the image. I think it worked so well for today’s card.

I’m absolutely happy with how my card turned out. Since I’ve started watercoloring, this is the best card I made. Hope you love my card as well. 🙂

I made a video tutorial to show you how I created my watercolor card. You can watch the video here or in HD on YouTube. Hope you find it helpful.

How to Make a Floral Background Card using Watercoloring

  1. Stamp the images from Wild Hibiscus and Botanical Garden with Ranger Archival black ink on a piece of Arches cold pressed watercolor paper. (Make sure to use a waterproof ink.)
  2. Watercolor the images using Kuretake Gansai Tambi 36 color set.
  3. Mount the watercolor panel on a A2 sized top folding card using foam tape.
  4. Stamp ‘Celebrate’ from Super Script with watermark ink, heat emboss it using gold embossing powder, die cut it with coordinating die and adhere it on the card front using foam tape
  5. Stamp the sentiment from Label Love with black ink and adhere it below the die cut.
  6. Finish off the card with some gold metallic thread and Sparkling Clear sequins from Pretty Pink Posh.

  4. Beautiful card. Your attention to the smallest detail is what really makes your creations perfect.

  5. A lot of time and love went into this beautiful card. Your water coloring is wonderful and I love that you mentioned the tip about letting it dry before adding more color.

  6. Absolutely NO ONE can combine different stamp sets and create beautiful backgrounds like you. Your watercoloring on this card is really lovely…seems you’ve mastered it. I never had any doubt you would. Fabulous card, should be hung in a gallery.

  8. These watercoloured images are beautiful. You’ve inspired me to try them with my outlines stamps. Thank you.

  9. What a beautiful, vibrant card! Botanical Garden recently arrived in my mailbox and I’m excited to put it to use.

  10. Your card is beautiful and I see nothing wrong with the watercolouring on the card you linked to either. One of the hardest things about WC is waiting for the paint to dry before adding more colour, I am not patient so I tend to colour an image just before going to bed because then I can’t add more to it and the colour dries thoroughly.
I love the colours you have used and the fact that you have left some areas white – something for me to try! Thanks for the blog hop, video and awesome inspirations Karen x

  11. Wonderful card and fantastic video. Your use of the MISTI and masking was so inspiring. Can’t wait to try it. I love how used only 3 color blends, left some flowers and leaves in black and white and added the gold thread for that wonderful touch of bling.

  12. Love the card made. Ive wanted to try using the Kuretake Gansai Tambi colors and this made me want to try more :).
