Hello, crafty friends! Welcome to the Pretty Pink Posh‘s 2nd birthday celebration blog hop! If you came from the talented Yuki’s blog, you are right on track. This is a three day event with tons of inspiration, and I’m so excited to be part of this special event. Without further ado, here is what I came up with:

DIYValentienShakerCardIdea

Since Valentine’s Day is coming, I couldn’t resist making a shaker card using sweet, yummy sequins from Pretty Pink Posh. I love the hand peeking out from the side and dropping hearts inside the box. Isn’t it so cute?

I just realized that I also made a valentine shaker card for their first birthday celebration last year. Hehe… I created a Love Potion shaker card using Pocket Border Die at that time. Which one do you like?

To create a colorful background, I used the ink smooshing technique for the first time. It was challenging because I couldn’t control the ink colors moving, but I’m happy with how it turned out(after a few tries.)

Here is a process video showing you how I created my card. You can watch it here or in HD on YouTube.

How to Make a Valentine’s Day Sequin Shaker Card

  1. Create a background on watercolor cardstock using ink smooshing technique and Distress Inks: Festive Berries, Twisted Citron, Peacock Feathers. Then add some white ink splatters.
  2. Stamp the hand from Hats Off with black ink, color it with Copic markers, cut it out with scissors.
  3. Die cut the frame out of red cardstock using Scallop Frames die from Pretty Pink Posh and the hearts using Mini Hearts die set.
  4. Adhere the hand and hearts on the ink smoothed background using foam tape. Then cut a piece of acetate and glut it to the back of the frame.
  5. Fill up the frame window with heart die-cuts and sequins: Sweetheart Mix and Sparkling Clear Mix.
  6. Place the scallop frame over the watercolor background using foam tape.
  7. Heat emboss the sentiment from On My Mark with white embossing powder and popped it up on the card front using foam tape.

What is the Ink Smooshing Technique?

It is a fun inking technique that can be used to achieve a watercolor look on your project. Simply transfer ink from an ink pad onto a piece of acetate and smoosh the acetate on your paper to add color.

How to Get the Best Blending?

  1. Spray enough water on your ink before picking up the colors with a piece of acetate.
  2. Don’t use complementary colors next to each other otherwise you will get muddy results.
  3. Don’t hesitate to go over and over again, if you want more intense colors.
  4. Let the water do the work. (It wasn’t easy for me to watch the water do the work, though.)

I’m not an expert at ink smooshing, but these are what I’ve learned from a couple of failed attempts. If you have any tips, please share yours in the comment below. Thanks in advance.

  1. How fun to include the hand on the shaker card! So playful! Those sequins make your card so inviting. This is my favorite card on the hop so far.

  2. Both cards are great – but so different. I love the bold color in this year’s card, but really like the love potion card, too. Glad I don’t have to pick just one!

  3. Ink smooshing – wow, great results with a process that requires faith and courage. I can see how you might have trouble “letting go”. I probably will too, but your result is so amazing that I’ve decided to give it a whirl! Thanks for sharing something new! Lovely!

  4. Wow that tie-dye card is super vibrant and fun! It definitely catches my eye! I like how the hearts match the colors of the background.

  5. Both cards are great, but I love the colors in your smooshed one! It’s a technique I haven’t tried yet, but I think I’ll give it a shot now!

  6. Oh my goodness your card is fantastic! Such a creative Valentines / shaker idea and your smooching ink background is perfect! Awesome Inspiration!!

  8. these are darling cards. Love all of the colors in the backgrounds of the first card. The hand peeking into the card with the heart is a fun idea.
showing the liquid in the beaker as off-balance was a great idea too.
thanks for sharing some fun cards.

  9. I think your two cards have been my favorite yet!!!! I LOVE the first card, very clever. The second one I like a lot too, interested in purchasing that die set!

  10. Great cards but I think the Love Potion card is my favorite. I’m always looking for different ways to use my dies. Thanks for the idea! 😀

  11. I want to try this smooshing technique, too. Yours came out so nice! Love the hand peeking in to drop in some hearts, cute!

  12. Wow! What a fabulous card with that ink smooshed background! I so appreciated your tips on how to achieve that look and just “let the water work.” I will have to give that a try as that has truly been one of the hardest things for me to achieve.

  13. Two delightful shaker cards! I’ve had no success with smooshing, but your video has given me incentive to try yet one more time. Fingers crossed. Your creativity and PPP products: magic!

  32. I had to laugh when you mentioned about not being able to control the colour with the Ink Smooshing. I had the same problem too but once I let go and let the process just happen, it was so much more fun!! An amazing card May, those colours are so bright! And I do remember your shaker card from last year, PPP sequins just call out to be made into shakers I think!
